Are you old enough to remember the old ringer type washing machines?  I as a child helped my Grandmother to wash the clothes and sheets.  Then we would ring out the water and hang the sheets on the line in the backyard.  I remember the sheets being so heavy that we used a long stick to prop the clothes line up to keep the sheets and clothes from touching the ground.
